Jenner suspended, will miss Team Canada game against Finland

CALGARY – Already relegated to the bronze medal finals after a stirring 6-5 loss to Russia on Tuesday night, Team Canada suffered another loss this morning.

Forward Boone Jenner, who received a match penalty and misconduct for spearing against the Russians, was issued a one-game suspension by the International Ice Hockey Federation, the governing body for the World Junior championships.

Jenner will miss the bronze medal match between Canada and Finland on Thursday.

"I knew they were reviewing it," Jenner said after the Team Canada practice Wednesday morning. "I was obviously hoping for the best but it was in their (the IIHF) hands and there was nothing I could do at that point."

Jenner had just been decked by an illegal hit from Ildar Isangulov late in the second period – the Russian had received a minor penalty – when star Russian forward Yevgeni Kuznetsov arrived on the scene to have words with the rugged Canadian foward, who speared Kuznetsov in the midsection.

"If I could go back, I’d like to have that back, but those things happen," Jenner added. "It was just the heat of the battle, I guess."

Team Canada’s Quinton Howden wasn’t a fan of Jenner’s suspension, however.

"It’s hard," Howden said. "Emotions get high out there. I didn’t really like the call... but it obviously goes to show we have to keep our emotions in check."
