Jennifer Jones celebrates 100th career victory

KINGSTON, ONT. -- And with that, the measure of Jennifer Jones’s success at the Canadian women’s curling championship is now tabulated in three digits.

Jones and the rest of her Manitoba foursome defeated New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford 7-6 here Friday afternoon to record the 100th victory of Jones’s career at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and move just one more victory away (against Saskatchewan tonight) from achieving another curling milestone as just the seventh team ever to go undefeated in the Scotties round-robin.

And if all that weren’t monumental enough, Thursday afternoon’s win also came with a more practical benefit as it also clinched first place for the Jones squad with a 10-0 record and guaranteed them hammer and their choice of rocks for Saturday’s page playoff 1 vs 2 game against Ontario’s Rachel Homan, where the winner advances straight to Sunday’s final while the loser gets a second chance in the semifinal.

"To have momentum is really what sport is all about -- getting on a bit of a roll," said Jones. "And right now, we’re on a bit of a roll."

Homan -- who Manitoba defeated on Thursday morning -- defeated PEI 10-2 Friday afternoon to improve to 9-1 and lock down second place overall.

Still to be determined, however, are the combatants in Saturday’s 3 vs 4 game. Canada’s Heather Nedohin suffered her third loss in her last four games with a stunning 10-8 defeat to NWT Friday afternoon to fall to 7-3, the same record as BC’s Kelly Scott.

Canada plays Ontario on the final round-robin draw Friday evening, while BC plays Quebec. Both Canada and BC will clinch a playoff berth with victories tonight, or a Saskatchewan loss to Manitoba.
