Three teams still 2-0 at Scotties

STONEWALL -- Top seed Jennifer Jones, fourth seed Barb Spencer and ninth seed Kate Cameron are all still perfect after two games here at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Jones improved to 2-0 on the 4 p.m. draw with a 10-5 win over LaSalle’s Deb McCreanor, while Cameron dropped Assiniboine-Memorial’s Michelle Montford 5-3 and Spencer drummed Brandon’s Liza Park 9-4 to also improve to 2-0.

In the only other game on the 4 o’clock draw, fifth seed Janet Harvey improved to 1-1 with an 8-2 win over Burntwood’s Charlene Norquay.

Jones got a small scare from McCreanor. Leading 4-1, the former four-time Canadian champion surrendered a three-ender to head into the fifth end break tied 4-4. But that was as close as McCreanor would get, as Jones went on to crack deuces in the sixth and eighth ends and then steal two more in the ninth end to seal the deal.

This is just the second competitive event Jones has curled in this season after taking off most of the winter to recuperate from knee surgery and have a baby.

"For me this is so much fun. I’m just so excited to be back on the ice. This is probably the most fun I’ve had at the provincials -- ever," Jones said after the win over McCreanor.

"I’m excited to play again and be back out there with the girls. I missed them -- they’re my best friends and I missed them."

Spencer, on the other hand, is enjoying the priviledge this year of playing with her daughter -- Katie -- for the first time at a provincials.

A former top junior, Katie Spencer is playing third for her mother in her first provincial women’s event. "I wouldn’t say emotional, but it’s great," said Barb Spencer. "It’s always nice to play with your family. I’m very proud of her and I’m very happy to be here with her."

The Scotties resumes on the 8:15 p.m. draw when the other eight teams in the event get their second game, including Cathy Overton-Clapham who takes on Brandon’s Stacey Fordyce and will be trying to bounce back from an upset loss in her opener earlier Wednesday to Pinawa’s Colleen Kilgallen.

Tonight’s other games will see Kilgallen play second seed Chelsea Carey, Jill Thurston take on Karen Fallis and Lisa Menard play Darcy Robertson.
