Jets guitar signed by Young, Hull to be auctioned

Jets fans, get your paddles ready.

A local charity is set to auction off a custom-made Winnipeg Jets guitar signed by Neil Young and Bobby Hull in support of children's health later this summer.

The guitar is one of only six made for Young, and Hull will add his autograph to the instrument during a stop in Winnipeg this afternoon. Hull is in town along with other former NHL stars for tonight’s Old Timers’ Hockey Challenge against Winnipeg police officers at the MTS Centre.

The guitar will be auctioned off at the Amadeus Steen Foundation’s annual gala on Aug. 18.

The foundation was created in 2006 by former Winnipeg Jet Thomas Steen and his ex-wife, Mona, in memory of their two-month-old son Amadeus who passed away 20 years ago.

The foundation’s most recent project has been the funding, design and creation of a $500,000 Critical Care Monitoring Unit in the Children’s Hospital of Manitoba. The unit opened in November of 2009.

NHL players like Theo Fleury, Dale Hawerchuk, Bryan Trottier, Glenn Anderson, Billy Smith, Borje Salming and Bobby Hull, who’s coaching, will partake in the 21st Annual Old Timers’ Hockey Challenge.

The game pits the Winnipeg Police Service Patrolmen Hockey Club against the skating stars, with proceeds going to the Rainbow Society, which fulfils dreams for kids with life-threatening illnesses.

Winnipeg Police Service Chief Keith McCaskill will drop the puck at the opening ceremony at 7 p.m. at the MTS Centre.

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster or 943-4952.
