Jets hockey academy begins second season

WINNIPEG -- Their main business, NHL hockey, is in hiatus for the moment, but True North has many other elements of community involvement.

This morning at the MTS Iceplex, the True North Foundation began its second season of the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy with local kids in Grades 2, 3 and 6, many of them first-timers on a pair of skates.

The program is designed for underserved kids and schools to give some of those who might not otherwise have an opportunity the chance to try hockey.

"It's a way for us to have a positive influence on youth in the province, the future leaders in the province," said Dwayne Green, executive director of the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation.

The Hockey Academy day helped Participaction on its cross-country tour to promote Sports Day in Canada, which is Saturday.
