Winnipeg Jets left-winger Kenndal McArdle (23) challenges New York Islanders defenceman Travis Hamonic (3) in the first period of their NHL hockey game at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.

Missing defencemen Tobias Enstrom, Mark Stuart, Ron Hainsey and Derek Meech and still without Eric Fehr, the Jets are battling valiantly with a made-over defensive corps that includes Brett Festerling and Mark Flood, called up Wednesday from the St. John’s IceCaps.

Evander Kane has the Jets' lone goal, his fifth of the season, burying his own rebound behind Rick DiPietro. Kane has been busy as he also hit the post on a penalty shot and then got into a fight with Travis Hamonic in the final minute of the first period.
