Jets sign centre Ben Maxwell

Thin down the middle, the Winnipeg Jets have bolstered the centre-ice spot on their depth chart by signing Ben Maxwell to a one-year deal.

Capgeek.com reports the 6-1, 195-pound centre who spent time with the Atlanta Thrashers, Chicago Wolves and Hamilton Bulldogs last season and was a restricted free agent has signed for $715,000.

Said Maxwell, a 23-year-old product of North Vancouver, via his Twitter account: "Signed on with the Jets yesterday, can’t wait to get things going in Winnipeg!"

Originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round (49th overall) of the 2006 NHL entry draft, Maxwell was traded along with a fourth-round pick in 2011 to Atlanta for Brent Sopel and Nigel Dawes.

He has appeared in 32 NHL games with Montreal and Atlanta and scored his first goal on March 27 of this year against Ottawa en route to being named the game’s first star.
