Jets winger Miettinen out of lineup for opening game

The grind that will be the 2013 National Hockey League season hasn’t even started yet and already the Winnipeg Jets are down a man.

Winger Antti Miettinen missed today’s training camp sessions after apparently suffering an ‘upper-body’ injury on Monday.

"He’s going to be out indefinitely," said Jets’ head coach Claude Noel after Day 3. "We’re doing some further testing on some things on him to assess the situation. It’s not day to day. He won’t be a player for Saturday."

The Jets open their condensed 48-game schedule Saturday at home to the Ottawa Senators, with puck drop at MTS Centre scheduled for 2 p.m. The team does hope to have an answer on Nik Antropov, who skated Saturday but apparently suffered an injury in the KHL, later this week. He could be back on the ice as early as Wednesday.

Miettinen’s absence meant that rookie Mark Scheifele was working on a line with Alex Burmistrov and Alex Ponikarovsky while the top two lines --- Olli Jokinen centering Evander Kane and Kyle Wellwood and Bryan Little between Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler – remained intact.

It also opens the door for another player to step up and possibly grab a bigger role.

"We don’t have a lot of numbers right here so there’s a lot of things that can transpire between today and Saturday," said Noel. "Antropov is a question. We’re making assessments and seeing what’s what. We’ll move people around and continue to do that with the next couple of days."
