Job prospects in city are stable, but not great: think-tank

WINNIPEG — The prospects of finding a job are so-so for Winnipeggers over the next few months, according to the latest help-wanted survey by the Conference Board of Canada.

The Ottawa-based think-tank said today that near-term job prospects are positive for only nine of the 26 Canadian cities it surveyed in August. Prospects are stable for 12 others, including Winnipeg, and negative for the remaining nine.

"Financial woes in Europe, a protracted U.S. recovery, and soft domestic demand will hold back labour market growth in Canada," the board said in releasing its latest monthly Metro Help-Wanted Index report.

The help-wanted index is based on the seasonally adjusted number of new, unduplicated jobs posted during the month on 79 job-posting websites in Canada.
