Katz, Lam family lead annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony

Mayor Sam Katz and the Lam family led the countdown for the annual Turning On of the Christmas Tree Lights at city hall Friday evening.

The choir from St. George’s Crescentwood Anglican Church provided support as several hundred onlookers gathered around the tree and the city hall Main Street steps and sidewalk, while Katz shouted out the countdown shortly after 6 p.m.

Joining Katz were the Lam family (Mabel, Andrew and Jason) of Niagara Street, who donated the 17-metre Colorado blue spruce.

The event was carried live on television during the CTV Winnipeg supper-hour newscast.

Katz also presented an $1,800 cheque to chaplain Mark Young in support of the Salvation Army/Winnipeg Fire Department Retirees Toy Mountain campaign.

"The Toy Mountain campaign brings a smile to the faces of young Winnipeggers," Katz said in a prepared statement, adding he encouraged the community to support the campaign with the donation of a new, unwrapped toys.

Katz’s financial donation was drawn from the Mayor’s Office civic initiatives fund.

The city hall Christmas tree, which is positioned on the Main Street side of the council chambers building, is decorated with 9,000 LED lights.
