Katz looking into Corydon decision

Mayor Sam Katz said he will look into a city committee's decision to stop work on development guidelines for the Corydon neighbourhood.

Without prior notice, Coun. Russ Wyatt (Transcona) introduced a motion at council's property's committee Tuesday that called on Winnipeg to take the unprecedented step of terminating work on secondary plans for the Corydon neighbourhood.

Wyatt said the process has been "poisoned" and the city should stop work on the planning process in light of concerns from the Corydon Avenue BIZ and business owners who allege the plan will restrict development and shut down local restaurants. Wyatt argued the city should start a new planning process.

Council's property committee voted in favour of halting the current process and starting fresh.

Katz said he has been inundated with phone calls from area residents and business owners since the decision. He said he will speak with councillors, residents and business owners to get the facts.

The decision to terminate work on secondary plans for the Corydon area will be reviewed by council's executive policy committee next week. City council also has to approve the decision.

"Everyone has called me. I've spoken with residents, I've spoken with business people," Katz said, following Wednesday morning's EPC meeting. "The one thing I can say to you is obviously there is a problem and it's got to be fixed."
