Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz says he will attend an official opening of the new fire-paramedic Station No. 11 on Portage Avenue, when such an event takes place.
The new Station No. 11, which replaces a soon-to-be-decommissioned Station No. 11 on Berry Street, opened Oct. 25 inside the cloverleaf at the northwest corner of Portage Avenue and Route 90.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service will take full possession of the station on Nov. 15. Katz said he will gladly attend an opening ceremony at the station and described a Free Press column that suggested he would not as unfair.
The mayor said he attended the opening ceremony of the new Station No. 27 in Sage Creek weeks after it began operating. He said Charleswood-Tuxedo Coun. Paula Havixbeck attended the opening of the new Station No. 18 on Roblin Boulevard on his behalf.
There was no opening ceremony for the new Station No. 12 built on Taylor Avenue on land owned by Shindico Realty.
Katz said he was not aware the new Station No. 11 was operational and pledged to attend an opening ceremony at that station, the last of four new fire-paramedic stations built in Winnipeg.
"When the department does one at Portage Avenue, I will be there," the mayor said in an interview.
