A 39-year-old Kenora woman is at the Health Sciences Centre this afternoon, recovering from two gunshot wounds fired Monday night in downtown Kenora by an Ontario Provincial Police officer.

The Special Investigations Unit said, in a news release issued today, the woman was shot after an "interaction" with an officer on 1st Street South at around 8:12 p.m. Monday. It did not identify the woman or release any further details about the incident.

Bruce Landon identified the woman as his ex-wife, Helen Proulx.

"I was just coming from Tim Hortons and I seen all these cops," Landon said. "I came to check it out and find out it’s my ex-wife."

A team of investigators from Ontario's Special Investigations Unit flew into Kenora this morning to take over the investigation The SIU is an independent, civilian agency that investigates incidents of serious injury involving a member of an Ontario police force.

"We're finally making headway," SIU investigator Dan Nywening said.

The woman was initially treated for her injuries at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, and then flown to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, said the Ontario Special Investigations Unit.

Her condition has now stabilized.

Four investigators and three forensic investigators from the SIU are investigating the shooting. Investigators ask anyone with information about the case contact the unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.
