Jones to face Kilgallen in playoffs at Scotties

STONEWALL -- Jennifer Jones will play Colleen Kilgallen and Chelsea Carey will play Barb Spencer in the page playoffs here at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Saturday evening.

Jones defeated Janet Harvey 8-2 on the 12:15 p.m. draw to finish her round-robin at 6-1 and capture first place in the eight-team Black Group.

"This was definitely our best game against Janet -- I thought we played really well," said Jones. "And that’s definitely a good thing heading into the playoffs. Hopefully, we’ll keep that going."

Spencer, meanwhile, thrashed Michelle Montford 10-0 to also finish at 6-1 and eliminate Montford, who finished at 5-2.

Because Spencer and Jones both finished with 6-1 records, the tiebreaker used was the result of their round-robin game, which Jones won Friday night.

That meant Jones was awarded first and will now play in the 1-vs.-1 game against Kilgallen, who finished first in the Red Group with a 6-1 record after a thrilling come from behind 9-8 win over Karen Fallis earlier Saturday. The loss eliminated Fallis.

Carey, meantime, finished second in the Red Group with a 5-2 record after a 10-4 defeat of Darcy Robertson.

"Playoffs is playoffs, whatever game we’re in is fine and as long as we’re in control," said Carey, who was facing elimination if she’d lost to Robertson. "

The 1-vs.-1 game and 2-vs.-2 game will both take place at 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Stonewall Veterans Memorial Sports Complex. Tickets are still available.

The game will also be broadcast live on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet Pacific. The game will also be joined live in progress at 9 p.m. on CITY-TV.

The winner of the 1-vs.-1 game advances straight to Sunday’s final, while the loser gets a second chance in Sunday’s semifinal. "I’m excited," said Kilgallen, a radiation therapist at CancerCare who has been the surprise story of this event so far. "We’ve put ourselves in a position where we have a couple cracks... I know we’re going to have some cracks at some more giants, but stranger things have been happening. I’m trying not to let myself dream about (winning a Manitoba women’s championship) because it’s still a long ways away. But it’s getting tougher to not dream about it."

The winner of the 2-vs.-2 game advances to the semifinal, while the loser is eliminated. "When you get down to this point, all the teams are good," said Spencer. "So it becomes a matter of just working on being consistent. And we’ve been that over the years.

"We know how difficult it is to win this province, so all we can do is our best."
