Groves takes bronze

  • Print

RICHMOND – Call it an impressive, but medal-less, return to the Olympic Games for Cindy Klassen and Clara Hughes.

But teammate Kristina Groves has upped Canada’s medal count to two with a bronze-medal performance.

Klassen and Hughes, the two Winnipeg-born skaters, along with Ottawa’s Groves, were huge fan favourites in the women’s 3000 metres at the Richmond Olympic Speed Skating Oval Sunday afternoon. Groves finished with a time of 4:04.84, good for third place behind Martin Sablikova of the Czech Republic (4:02.53) and Germany’s Stephanie Beckert (4:04.62).

Hughes finished fifth in 4:06.01 and Klassen was 14th with a time of 4:15.53.
