REPLAY: Latest on IKEA opening in News Café interview today

Swedish furniture maker IKEA announced an opening date of Nov. 28 for its highly-anticipated south Winnipeg location. Store manager Stephen Bobko and Maegan Sheskey, PR for IKEA Winnipeg, came by the News Café for an interview.

They discussed the progress of the building's construction, when the shelves will be stocked, the hiring of 350 employees and what crazy antics Winnipeggers might be up to before the store opens.

The announcement heralded the opening of Winnipeg’s first-ever IKEA store, a massive 395,00-square-foot outlet located near Sterling Lyon Parkway and Kenaston Boulevard.

Bobko gave a media tour of the Swedish furniture retail outlet following the announcement.

The Winnipeg store will be the 13th in Canada.

More than 3,000 online applications have been received since IKEA announced in late June that it would hire 300 to 350 workers for the Winnipeg store.

The store will anchor the Seasons of Tuxedo retail development where Cabela's, the lavish big-box outdoors store, has already committed to building a 72,000-square-foot outlet.

There are a total of 325 IKEA stores around the world in 40 countries.
