Latin, blues featured in Nu Sounds series

JAZZ Winnipeg’s 2013 Nu Sounds series kicks off with a pairing of Latin and blues with Trio Bembe and Rambling Dan Frechette in a mix of world rhythms and storytelling, Friday, Jan. 25, at the Park Theatre.

The series designed to showcase Manitoba talent continues on Sunday, March 17, at the Park when guitarist Keith Price leads two jazz quartets in performing a new jazz-fusion score for the classic film The Good, The Bad and the Ugly to accompany scenes from the movie.

Cain-Fournier-Gatien-Platz — Michael Cain (piano, keyboards, electronics), Gilles Fournier (bass), Greg Gatien (saxophone) and Eric Platz (drums) — will celebrate the release of a new, as yet untitled CD on Saturday, April 13, at the Park. The band explores new compositions with re-imaginations of jazz standards.

Icelandic guitarist Björn Thoroddsen joins some of Winnipeg’s best guitarists — Greg Lowe, Tim Butler, Larry Roy, Chet Breau and Ariel Posen — for Guitarama, a celebration of all styles of guitar-playing, Saturday, May 11, at the Park.

Individual tickets are $12 advance/$15 door or $40 for all four shows, available as of Nov. 21 at jazzwinnipeg.com, 204-989-4656.
