Law students discuss proposed tuition hike today

WINNIPEG - Law students at the University of Manitoba will be able to get answers behind a proposed tuition increase this afternoon.

The Faculty of Law will hold a consultation on the tuition jump Friday at 1 p.m. in the moot court room at the law faculty.

Earlier this month the faculty outlined a proposal to gradually increase tuition fees to $12,000 per student over the next three years, an increase of 46 per cent.

Acting dean Dr. Lorna Turnbull has indicated that 85 per cent of the revenues generated by the tuition-fee increase would be allocated to the faculty.

Earlier this month the I.H. Asper School of Business proposed an increase of 78.5 per cent over three years for MBA students, while student leaders say medicine wants a 114 per cent increase over four years, dentistry 40 per cent, agriculture 20 per cent, and the three medical rehabilitation programs 30 to 60 per cent.

Students in the pharmacy and nursing faculties are also facing tuition fee increases.
