Lions cut Hefney loose

REGINA  -- Jonathan Hefney’s NFL dream took a hit late Saturday with his release by the Detroit Lions.

But Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans shouldn’t be jumping up and down just yet about a possible return of the all-star defensive back who was the East Division’s top rookie last year while wearing blue and gold.

Hefney, the popular halfback, was among the final cuts Saturday as all NFL teams had to declare their final rosters in advance of this week’s opening of the regular season. The Tennessee product finished last year with 66 tackles and four interceptions for the Bombers and parlayed that into a tryout with the Lions.

He could still be in the picture with the Lions as a possible practice-roster player, but if he isn’t his rights would revert back to the Bombers.

Meanwhile, discussions are continuing between the Bombers and the agent for receiver Titus Ryan, who was cut last month by the Dallas Cowboys.
