A six-year-old girl, the daughter of former University of Manitoba jazz instructor Jimmy Greene, was killed in the mass shooting at a Connecticut school today.
Terry Janke, senior pastor for the Whyte Ridge Baptist Community Church, confirmed the news tonight.
Greene's daughter, Ana, in Grade 1, and son, Isaiah, in Grade 3, attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, where the mass shooting occurred this morning in Newtown.
Isaiah wasn't injured in the shooting.
A vigil was held to remember the little girl, whose family attended the church before moving to the town of Newton, Conn., earlier this year.
"The people who came tonight were all from our church... there were probably 50 or 60 people that were here, and were just comforting each other and praying," said Janke. "Many families were here because they were friends with the little girl that died."
Her father, Jimmy, an accomplished jazz saxophone player, taught at the U of M for three years.
Greene's wife, Nelba Márquez-Greene, a licensed marriage and family therapist, worked the past two years teaching at the University of Winnipeg.
Their daughter and son had attended Linden Christian School in Winnipeg before the family moved to Connecticut where Jimmy Greene is originally from.
