Work for peace --- only in a peaceful world can great change be achieved, former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev implored 18,000 Manitoba children this morning.

"Be united, and don’t allow anyone to divide you. Never fear those who are trying to intimidate you," said the Nobel peace laureate at the second We Day Manitoba.

"We need to move to a world without nuclear weapons," Gorbachev said.

"We need to get rid of the militarization of politics, the militarization of society," he declared.

"I like you guys --- I love you!" the 81-year-old said to thunderous applause.

Premier Greg Selinger drew huge roars of approval from 18,000 students when he called on them to work together to stop bullying.

Can we work together to reach out to the kid sitting alone, the child who dresses a little differently, the newcomer who can’t speak English, asked the premier.

"Yes, we can!" Selinger declared.

Selinger lauded We Day sponsors Bob Silver, Mark Chipman and Hartley Richardson as the three wise men.

"It was their idea to bring We Day to Manitoba," said Selinger.
