Local engineering firms win national awards

WINNIPEG — Two Winnipeg engineering firms walked away with the top two prizes at a national engineering awards dinner last night in Ottawa.

Tower Engineering Group Limited Partnership won the Schreyer Award for the most technically innovative project for its design of a highly energy-efficient ice arena/recreational centre — The South Interlake Recreation Centre — in Warren, Man.

And AMEC Earth & Environmental won the Tree For Life Award for outstanding stewardship for developing an innovative and cost-effective method for cleaning up a contaminated Federated Co-operatives Limited bulk fuel and bulk fertilizer storage site in Gladstone, Man.

The two awards were among a total of 12 handed out last night at the 2009 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards dinner in Ottawa.

The annual design-awards competition is co-sponsored by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies and the Canadian Consulting Engineers magazine.
