London Drugs to offer local company's skin cholesterol test

London Drugs is expanding its offering of the PreVu non-invasive skin cholesterol point of care (POC) test — produced and developed by Miraculins Inc., the Winnipeg company that develops medical diagnostic technology — to all 76 of its pharmacy locations throughout Western Canada.

Earlier this fall London Drugs started testing the new skin-cholesterol kit at 11 stores in Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and one store in Winnipeg.

The PreVu POC Test was available for a special introductory price of $19.99. It is performed in-store by London Drugs pharmacists and the test can be conducted in less than 5 minutes, with the results being readily available for a next-steps discussion.

John Tse, vice-president, pharmacy for London Drugs, said, "Based on a very successful pilot... and the positive response of the public and our pharmacy team, we see significant value in bringing the PreVu POC Test to customers throughout our entire network of stores, to help them better understand their potential risk of coronary artery disease."

Miraculins officials advise based on a patient’s PreVu test results, formal risk assessment including blood cholesterol testing may be warranted or should be considered. The PreVu POC Test does not diagnose the presence or absence of coronary artery disease (CAD), but it can quickly identify individuals who may possess hidden, higher levels of risk of CAD by measuring their skin cholesterol levels.

Clinical studies have shown that elevated skin cholesterol is strongly associated with an increased risk of serious atherosclerotic disease.
