Luxury home sales in Winnipeg slow down

WINNIPEG — Winnipeggers aren’t snapping up luxury homes — properties priced at $500,000 or more — with the same zeal as last year, according to a new report from Re/Max.

The real estate firm said 10 fewer luxury homes sold in the city during the first three months of this year than in the first quarter of 2011 — 58 versus 68 — for a percentage decline of 15 per cent.

That bucked a trend which saw luxury homes sales rise in 13 of the 16 Canadian cities surveyed by the company.

Re/Max said there’s clearly an appetite for luxury properties in Winnipeg. It noted the most expensive detached home to sell during the quarter — a house on Wellington Crescent that sold for $975,500 — and the most expensive condominium to change hands — a unit, also on Wellington Crescent, which sold for $525,000 — both attracted multiple offers.

However, buyers were being exceptionally discriminating, it said, with most opting to spend no more than $550,000.

However, the company predicts the pace of sales will pick up as the year unfolds, and finish either on par or slightly ahead of last year’s level. It didn’t say how many luxury homes sold in Winnipeg in 2011.
