MGEU wins right to represent Prairie Mountain RHA workers

The Manitoba Government and General Employees Union has won a vote to represent more than 800 technical, professional and paramedical workers in western Manitoba.

The MGEU and Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals had been battling to represent workers at three former regional health authorities that were required by law last year to merge into what is now known as the Prairie Mountain Health Authority.

Both unions had represented at least some of the workers in the past.

Prairie Mountain is made up of the former Assiniboine, Brandon and Parkland regional health authorities.

With the merger of 11 health regions into five,  "representation" votes are being held throughout Manitoba, except in Winnipeg. A third union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, is participating in some of the votes.

Until a new contract is negotiated between representatives of the MGEU and the employer, each union’s previous collect agreement will remain in place.
