MMF offers gift of distribution, office space to Christmas Cheer Board

The Manitoba Metis Federation has come through for the Christmas Cheer Board in a huge way.

The MMF, through its Crown corporation, the Metis Economic Development Organization (MEDO), has donated a new storage and distribution location to the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board. The more than 30,000-square-foot warehouse and office facility, which MEDO recently acquired, is located in the heart of Point Douglas.

"I am very pleased to announce this new partnership as part of our longstanding commitment to the valuable services provided every year by the Christmas Cheer Board" said MMF president David Chartrand. "This will be another step towards our shared goal of improving the quality of life for families in need, particularly in and around Point Douglas."

Cheer board executive director Kai Madsen said the MMF facility on Sutherland Avenue is beautiful, but the organization will keep its Ellice Avenue location and distribute hampers from there. The Point Douglas location is for one year only.

"Neither one is big enough," said Madsen.

Madsen said student volunteers will go to the Sutherland Avenue location to fill the hampers. He said then the hampers would be transferred to the board’s Ellice Avenue and Milt Stegall Drive location for distribution to the people who qualify for them.

Madsen said the presents that also go with the bins will be wrapped at both locations.

"We have our computers at Ellice so the distribution has to be done there," he said.

The Cheer Board’s long-term dream is to get a permanent facility, Madsen said.

The MMF has a clear vision for development and investment in the core area and has taken a leadership role through its economic development strategy, Chartrand said.

"MEDO, on behalf of our Metis government, is involved in land and housing development, improved services and program delivery as well as procurement for inner city non-profit agencies" said Chartrand.. "Since many of the activities of the Christmas Cheer Board are performed in this area as well, we can sincerely say welcome home

"Our Metis government is committed to ensuring that every child from every community receives the Christmas that they dream of and fully deserve" concluded Chartrand.
