Major changes required in Deer Lodge ward, review finds

WINNIPEG -- A six-page external review into patient care in one ward of Deer Lodge Centre concluded major changes must be made, including increasing staffing levels, improving communication between staff and family, training staff on abuse and neglect, and hiring a new ward mananger with "exceptional interpersonal and management skills."

Deer Lodge began the review of care in the 44-bed unit after complaints from families, including those from Maureen Anderson. Her husband Chuck, 77, died there after being left unattended in a bathroom and falling.

New management took over Ward 6 in February.

Seventeen families and one patient took part in the quality-of-care review surveys and interviews.

The report calls on administration and staff to make a "directed effort" to focus on patient care first and foremost.
