Man pleads guilty in burning death of Winnipegger

A Winnipeg man has pleaded guilty to a gruesome homicide in which the victim was set on fire.

Gaston Leroy Genaille, 21, was set to begin his trial Monday on a charge of second-degree murder. Instead, he admitted responsibility for the September 2010 attack and now faces a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for at least 10 years.

No other details of the incident – including a potential motive – were disclosed in court. Sentencing has been adjourned and Genaille remains in custody.

Gerald Dumas, 47, suffered serious burns throughout much of his body after being doused in a flammable substance and set ablaze while walking in an alley behind 544 Selkirk Ave. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died several days later.
