Man arrested, $26K worth of satellite TV equipment seized

Police have arrested a man and seized equipment in an unusual case involving the theft of satellite television.

Wednesday morning, RCMP and inspectors from Industry Canada executed two search warrants – one at a business on St. Mary's Road and the other at a home on Lodge Avenue.

The warrants stemmed from an ongoing investigation. Police arrested a man at the Lodge Avenue home and seized nine computers and 144 satellite television receivers. The equipment is valued at approximately $26,000.

Police also seized a number of uncertified wireless security cameras offered for sale at the store. The cameras operate on frequencies reserved for aeronautical navigation and their use could pose a threat to public safety.

A 29-year-old man from Winnipeg is facing charges under the Criminal Code and the Radiocommunications Act.

More arrests are expected.

The RCMP remind the public that theft of satellite pay television is illegal, as is the sale of equipment modified to intercept television signals illegally.
