Man caught after mugging Saturday

A 27-year-old man is in custody after a violent robbery Saturday morning in the Exchange District.

At about 5:25 a.m., a 43-year-old woman was walking in the area of McDermot Avenue and Adelaide Street when a man confronted her and demanded money.

She tried to call for help but was dragged to a secluded area and physically assaulted by the male.

A passer-by who heard the woman's screams called police who arrived on scene immediately. The thief fled, but police gave chase and arrested the man with the help of the canine unit.

The woman was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Michael Wayne Beauchamp is charged with robbery with violence, overcoming resistance, uttering threat to cause death or bodily harm and two counts of failing to comply with the conditions of a recognizance. He is being held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
