Man facing life term for torching death

A Winnipeg man has pleaded guilty to killing a stranger by setting him on fire during an apparent robbery attempt.

Gaston Leroy Genaille, 21, was about to begin his trial Monday on a charge of second-degree murder. Instead, he admitted responsibility for the September 2010, attack that made headlines across the country.

Genaille faces an automatic life term when he returns to court Jan. 9 for sentencing. The only issue is parole eligibility. But Crown attorney Mary Goska told court she will not seek to raise it from the mandatory minimum of 10 years.

Gerald Dumas, 47, suffered serious burns to much of his body after being doused in a flammable substance and set ablaze while walking in an alley behind 544 Selkirk Ave. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died several days later. Dumas was described by family and friends as a "gentle giant" who was randomly attacked after he went to buy beer.
