Man in critical condition after shooting

WINNIPEG - A man was shot and critically injured early this morning at a Balmoral Avenue boarding house that has been the scene of two homicides in the past 13 months.

Winnipeg Police said the latest incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, when officers responded to a call to 624 Balmoral St. about a man being shot.

Police said they found a man with bullet wounds to his upper body, who was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The rooming house is notorious for violence. In January of this year, Valerie Paypompee, 36, was stabbed in a second-floor suite. Mulugeta Geddy Gillamichael, 34, has been charged with second-degree murder. No trial date has been set.

In November, 2008, Philip Mayur, 39, was fatally stabbed in another second-floor suite in the same complex, at 626 Balmoral. Two men, Kworo Ojulu, 26, and Ojullo Agwa, 42, were charged with first-degree murder the following December. They are awaiting trial.

Mayur was no stranger to violence before his death. In 2005, Mayur was charged twice with assaulting a neighbour and threatening to kill her in a dispute over money.
