Man pleads guilty in fatal shooting in The Pas
A man with a violent criminal past has admitted to a deadly Manitoba shooting.
Jonathan Diego Young, 24, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder and attempted murder for the October 2009 incident in The Pas. He faces a mandatory life sentence, and lawyers indicated they will make a joint recommendation to raise parole eligibility to 16 years from the minimum of 10.
The body of Ryan Bradley Chartier, 21, of Grand Rapids, was found after police were called to a shooting at the complex on Larose Avenue in the early morning hours. Officers and emergency crews found the man, who was not breathing, and attempted CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 21-year-old man was also wounded and taken by air ambulance to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.
Young was on probation at the time of the killing and had also been ordered not to posses any weapons. He has been in custody since his arrest. More details about the attack will be presented at Young’s sentencing hearing later this year.
