Man returning to prison for trafficking
A young man who has already served a lengthy sentence for a home invasion is going back to prison on trafficking convictions and he is awaiting trial for another home invasion.
Richard C. Meade, 25, was given a 5 1/2-year prison sentence Thursday morning after being convicted of possessing and trafficking cocaine, marijuana and cannibis resin.
Justice Albert Clearwater said he could have given Meade a 10-12 year prison sentence but said that would have been too long and crushed his spirit, adding the shorter sentence was more appropriate and gives Meade a chance to improve his education and learn a job skill.
Meade had already served a six-year sentence for a home invasion he committed in October 2005. He was released in December 2010 and arrested again in February 2011 on the drug charges. Police had executed a search warrant on a home on Pritchard Avenue, where they found 274 grams of cannabis wrapped in 10 one-ounce bags, three pounds of marijuana and $3,500 in cash. The cocaine was found in a shoe box in a closet.
Meade’s step-father, Walter Struch, had pleaded guilty to possession charges at a preliminary hearing, admitting that he let Meade hide the cannabis and marijuana in his home but denied knowing the cocaine was there. He was given a 27-month sentence.
However, at Meade’s trial, Struch testified that the drugs were his and that Meade was not involved.
Clearwater said that Struch’s testimony was not credible.
While Meade was out on bail on the drug charges, he and two other men were arrested Feb. 11, 2012 for a home invasion that night in the 600-block of Talbot Avenue. Three armed men wearing masks forced their way into the home, beat a 45-year-old resident and stole some personal items. A trial date not has been set.
