Man takes to rooftop to evade capture

A man who tried evading police earlier today by climbing onto the roof of a house is now facing a charge of stealing a truck.

Winnipeg police said today that a 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were arrested and released on a promise to appear in court.

Earlier, the man surrendered after two officers and two firefighters used a bucket on the ladder of a fire truck to speak to him and help him down.

Police said officers went to the 1300 block of Raleigh Street at about 6 a.m., after learning a red GMC pickup truck had been stolen sometime overnight.

Police found the truck parked in the west back lane in the 400 block of Furby Street, and arrested a woman at a nearby residence.

But police said a man was spotted climbing out of a third-floor window and going onto the roof.
