Man used bear spray in robberies, arrested: police

A 21-year-old man has been arrested for two robberies involving bear spray.

Police arrested the man Tuesday after a robbery at about 3:50 p.m. at a gas bar on the 1100 block of Logan Avenue.

The man allegedly went into the gas bar with bear spray and demanded cash, then fled on foot.
Officers who responded to the call then saw the man near Alexander Avenue and Blaine Street.

The man then allegedly pointed bear spray at police, who disarmed him.

Police said the same man was involved in a robbery last Saturday at a lounge on the 1900 block of Bishop Grandin Boulevard.

In that robbery, a suspect went into the lounge at about 12:50 a.m. and robbed cash.

Stephen Michael Toews, 21, is now charged with two counts of robbery with a weapon, two counts of disguise with intent, two counts of possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, and one count of assault police officer. Toews was detained.
