WINNIPEG --The  Manitoba Hydro building is now part of an elite group of structures that have been awarded the 2010 National Green Buildings Award by Sustainable Architecture & Building Homes (SAB Homes).

Eight sustainable and energy efficient buildings were chosen throughout the country for buildings that enhance their respective environments.

The awards are in their third year, and the buildings were chosen based on the criteria of sustainable design, architectural excellence and technical innovation.

The 65,000-square-metre Manitoba Hydro building was chosen for its solar chimney, its use of geothermal heating, and extra window glazing that amounts to 60 per cent in energy savings.

Don Griffith, publisher of Sustainable Architecture Buildings magazine said, "These builders, remodelers, developers and green advocates have blazed a path in sustainable construction and this year’s recipients are helping us all towards a greener future."
