Manitoba Hydro resolves problem; lifts power advisory

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg residents can crank up the air conditioning again now that Manitoba Hydro has finished repairs at a substation that led to a power failure for 5,000 homes.

The city and much of the southern half of the province is sweltering under a heatwave with daily temperatures regularly above 30.

The utility had asked customers to reduce their power consumption while the repairs to the substation in south-central Winnipeg were completed.

Residents in that part of the city were without power overnight Sunday.

Hydro spokesman Scott Powell says it was never an issue of not having enough power.

Even though power consumption is setting records thanks to the heat wave — 3,000 megawatts is the new high mark set — the utility can generate almost twice that.
