Manitoba Liberals won't go Green

Manitoba Liberals have rejected the notion of reaching out to the Green Party of Manitoba.

Liberals voted down a motion at their annual general meeting Saturday that would have seen their party "undertake discussions about the possibility of co-operation and collaboration" with the Greens.

Altogether, 25 party members voted against the resolution while 17, including now-interim party leader Jon Gerrard, supported it. There was one abstention.

Those supporting the motion argued that the two parties have much in common, including on environmental policy. Those opposed to discussing co-operation with the Greens worried about the ramifications such a move would have on attracting potential leadership candidates.

Gerrard formally stepped down as leader Friday evening. He will continue on an interim basis until a new leader is elected.

Late Friday, the party decided to waive a rule that would have required a new leader to be in place by this time next year. A spring 2013 Manitoba Liberal race, however, would have conflicted with the federal Liberal leadership contest next spring. Manitoba Liberals will now pick their new leader in the fall of 2013. A date and location are still to be decided.

The co-operation proposal nixed by Liberals Saturday would have also required a party plebiscite before any formal arrangement could have been implemented.

Manitoba Liberals hold one seat in the 57-seat Manitoba Legislature – Gerrard’s River Heights constituency. Gerrard plans to remain in the seat until the next general election.
