Manitoba cash registers among Canada's busiest

WINNIPEG — Manitoba turned in one of the best retail performances in the country in May, according to new seasonally adjusted figures issued today.

Statistics Canada said Manitoba retailers rang up $1.3 billion worth of sales during the month. That was an increase of 0.6 per cent from the previous month’s total of $1.29 billion, and up 6.3 per cent from May 2009’s tally of $1.22 billion.

The month-over-month increase was the third largest among the provinces, with only British Columbia (1.5 per cent) and New Brunswick (1.2 per cent) posting bigger gains.

And the year-over-year increase was second only to British Columbia’s 7.5 per cent.

StatsCan said Manitoba was one of only five provinces to post a sales increase from April to May. As a result, Canada saw its sales slip by 0.2 per cent to $36 billion for the month.

However, the national year-over-year numbers were more impressive, with Canada’s sales up 5.2 per cent from May of last year.
