Manitoba child dies after H1N1 diagnosis

A third death linked to the H1N1 virus has been reported in Manitoba.

The provincial Health Department gave few details late this afternoon about the individual except to say that he or she was a "child under 18 years" of age with underlying medical conditions and had "a prior lab-confirmed positive test" for H1N1.

"This case is still under investigation," the department said in a news release.

The province had previously reported two H1N1 flu deaths — a Winnipeg man in his 40s who had no known significant underlying health conditions and a woman from the Nor-Man health region who had "significant underlying conditions."

To date, Manitoba has had 458 laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1.

The province said it continues to monitor closely the level of severe respiratory illness in Manitoba.

As of June 22, there were 37 patients on ventilators in intensive care units with severe respiratory illness in Manitoba.
