Manitoba posts increase in manufacturing shipments
WINNIPEG — Manitoba was one of only four provinces to post an increase in manufacturing shipments in June, according to Statistics Canada figures released today.
The agency said $1.31 billion worth of goods were shipped from Manitoba factories during the month. That was a three per cent increase from the $1.27 billion worth of goods shipped in May.
June’s rebound followed a 0.2 per cent decline in sales from April to May.
Despite the improvement, June’s sales were still down two per cent from a year earlier, when $1.34 billion worth of goods were sold.
Nationally, Statistics Canada said a 10.6 per cent drop in sales of petroleum and coal products pushed down overall manufacturing sales in Canada to $48.9 billion in June. That was 0.4 per cent lower than in the previous month.
The agency said a number of factors contributed to the decline in petroleum and coal products, including a price drop, shutdowns at several refineries, and lower volumes at others.
It noted that 12 of other 20 industries reported higher sales for the month.
