The province formally signed a 10-year contract today with the Alberta-based helicopter ambulance service STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society).
The Manitoba government had been employing the service since last spring.
In that time, the province estimates the service has saved 50 lives, Health Minister Theresa Oswald said at the signing ceremony on West Hangar Road.
A permanent Manitoba crew of 14 pilots, paramedics and nurses has already been trained. The crew is now available 12 hours per day. The crew will double when 24-hour service is later introduced.
STARS has responded to more than 150 emergencies since arriving in Manitoba. The new deal will cost the province about $10 million a year.
