Manitoba slows implementation of new math curriculum
Manitoba is slowing down implementation of its new math curriculum to ensure students learn the math they need for university and the workplace, Education Minister Nancy Allan said this morning.
The province needs to strike a balance among skills development, conceptual understanding of math, and problem-solving, Allan said.
Allan will also work with university faculties of education to strengthen the training that teacher candidates receive, to give them the skills necessary to teach math.
Manitoba students finished second-worst in the country in a 2010 national math test conducted by the Council of Ministers of Education in Canada.
