Team Manitoba is getting ready to return from the Canada Games with a triumphant collection of hardware and a medal-laden flagbearer.
Manitoban athletes collected 35 medals over two weeks of competition in Sherbrooke, Que., smashing their previous record of 29 set in 1989. The Manitoban contingent added two more medals to their haul on the last day of events Saturday, where the women's basketball team and the men's beach volleyball team both earned a bronze.
To celebrate the achievement, the Manitoban contingent announced that paddler Hannah Guttormson, 17, will serve as flag bearer for Saturday night's closing ceremonies.
Guttormson, along with her teammate Stephanie Lowry, won Manitoba's first gold medal in the women's canoe-kayak with their 5,000-metre win.
The pair also earned bronze in the 500-metre race and Guttormson took home an individual bronze in the 5,000-metre single paddle.
