Manitoba's drinking, food industry really cooking

WINNIPEG— Manitoba’s food services and drinking places industry was cooking in February, according to new sales data released Monday.

Statistics Canada said the industry, which includes full-service and limited-service restaurants, bars and lounges, and food-service contractors, caterers and mobile-food services, recorded the biggest month-over-month and year-over-year sales increases in the country for the month.

Sales topped $129.5 million, which was a 1.5 per cent increase from January’s total of $127.6 million, and a 12.1 per cent improvement over February 2011’s tally of $115.5 million.

StatsCan said Canada saw virtually no change in its sales in February — up a mere 0.1 per cent to $4.3 billion — after only four provinces registered gains from the previous month and the rest posted declines.

All 10 provinces reported an increase in sales from a year earlier, while Canada’s February-over-February gain was 5.4 per cent.
