Double digit spikes in gasoline and cigarette prices in June pushed Manitoba’s inflation rate up almost a full point to 2.7 per cent in June, the highest in the country.
Statistics Canada said that nationally inflation came in at an annualized rate of 1.2 per cent, in line with economist expectations and up from a low rate of 0.7 per cent the previous month.
In Manitoba the 2.7 per cent year over year increase in the consumer price index in June, following a 1.8 per cent gain in May. Gasoline prices rose 10.7 per cent in the 12 months to June, after advancing 0.9 per cent in May.
Among the provinces, Manitoba also posted the largest year-over-year price increase for cigarettes and for passenger vehicle registration fees.
