Massage therapists continue seeking health-profession status

The Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba renewed its lobbying of the province today to be recognized as regulated health profession like doctors and nurses.

The association joins the Paramedics Association of Manitoba which filed their request in April to Health Minister Theresa Oswald.

If accepted paramedics and massage therapists would be the 23rd and 24th regulated health profession in Manitoba, respectively.

Massage Therapists Association executive director George Fraser said the public would be better protected by massage therapists becoming a regulated health profession.

"Massage therapy has always been on the outside looking in," he said. "Anyone can hang up a shingle and call themselves a massage therapist."

Fraser said massage therapists work side by side with other health professionals in treatment of patients. More information is at www.mtam.mb.ca

He said there are about 900 massage therapists in Manitoba who hold the required two-year diploma for Entry of Practice in the profession.

He said Ontario, Newfoundland and British Columbia already recognize massage therapists and other provinces are considering it.
