May was a good month for Manitoba's bar, restaurant and food services business
WINNIPEG — May was a good month to be in the bar, restaurant and food services business in Manitoba.
Statistics Canada data released today show Manitoba’s food services and drinking places industry rang up the country’s second biggest month-over-month and year-over-year increase in sales in May.
The monthly tally of $132.5 million was a 1.8 per cent increase over April’s $130.2 million, and a 9.6 per cent improvement from May 2011’s $120.9 million.
The only province to post a bigger monthly gain was Alberta, at 2.3 per cent. And the only one with a bigger year-over-year increase was Newfoundland and Labrador, with 12.8 per cent.
May’s 1.8 per cent increase for Manitoba follows a 0.6 per cent decline in April.
Nationally, Canada’s industry posted a 1.1 per cent increase in sales from April to May — $4.41 billion versus $4.36 billion — and a 5.3 per cent gain from May of last year, when sales were $4.19 billion.
The food services and drinking places industry includes full- and limited-service restaurants, drinking places, and food services providers, including contractors, caterers and mobile food services.
