Mayes wants council to stop tinkering with transportation plan

St. Vital Coun. Brian Mayes wants Winnipeg to stick to the plan.
This morning, the rookie councillor said he intends to bring forward a motion that calls for a moratorium on changes to the city's transportation master plan. Mayes said he's trying to signal to the rest of council that they should not rush in with requests to amend the planning document and attempt to prioritize projects in their wards.
Winnipeg just completed an extensive $2-million review of its future transportation needs, and city council approved the long-term transportation master plan in November.
Last week, council voted to move up $300 million in road work after Couns. Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan) and Paula Havixbeck (Charleswood-Tuxedo) called for it to be completed earlier. Council voted to extend the Chief Peguis Trail to Route 90 and the William Clement Parkway to Wilkes Avenue, both by 2016.
The planning document initially said Winnipeg should extend Chief Peguis Trail to McPhillips Street by 2021 and connect it to Route 90 by 2031. It called for the William Clement Parkway extension to be complete by 2021.
"We don't have the money to fund these projects anyway, so let's try to leave the plan alone," Mayes said.
